Greg, I would love to see the recovery position study done again adding a third position group: standing facing a wall, inclined forwards, but instead of hands on knees, hands outstretched using the arms to post up against the wall, as though you are going to push the wall away.
I found all of your explanations resonant. The possible sympathetic parasympathetic response is plausible, and especially the improved zone of apposition which the wall brace also achieves with the potential benefit of elongating the entire torso creating a less compressed zone for the diaphragm to work against.

Okay, just did a little n=1 experiment. Methodology: One chubby old subject, 5-rounds of a barbell complex. HR tested upon completion of each round, again at :60, and once again at :120. HR is unscientifically measured with a ten second count multiplied by 6 to reach a BPM standard.
Recovery positions were as follows. HK (hands on knees), HH (hands behind head), W (wall brace), HK (retest), S (supine). Results are as follows:
R1, HK: 162 -102 – 96 (warm up, still fresh, included for general interest.
R2, HH: 174 -144 -126
R3, W: 174 -132 -120
R4, HK: 162- 120-114
R5, S: 156-108-108
The researcher draws the following broscientific conclusions:
