Hey guys,
great review on the whey vs plant based protein study. Very interesting read. One thing that striked me is the choice of participants there. Would you expect different results when comparing (relatively) long term vegan, let’S say at least 6 – 12 month, lifters with an average (i.e. “omnivore”…I do not like this classification, therefore the quotes) lifters? Basically due to differences in the gut microbiom. This could imply different availability for plant based protein in average lifters and vice versa in vegan lifters.
Just a thought, that was not adressed at all in the discussion of the study, Neither were dietary preferences of the participants, unfortunately.
Would be great to hear your thoughts on this.
Cheers
Stefan

That’s an interesting possibility to consider, but I personally doubt it would make much of a difference. The vast majority of the amino acids are being digested and absorbed regardless; it’s primarily a matter of the composition of those amino acids.
Stefan Berkow says
Didn’t they control for the composition in the study? The plant protein blends that were given, were all adjusted to whey protein, right? Or was it just Leucine….have to read that up again.
Greg Nuckols says
Yep. But I’m saying that, realistically, that’s the only thing that SHOULD matter. I can’t see how the gut microbiome would affect things, at least in this context.

Gotcha…thanks for the reply!
